John Tavares and the Islanders defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in the shootout 4-3. Tavares finished the game with three points and had a hand in all three-regulation goals for the Islanders. Frans Nielsen and PA Parenteau lifted the Islanders to victory with each player scoring in the shootout.
The Islander started the game on a high note, scoring the games opening goal nearly four minutes into the game. Matt Martin coaxed Bryan Allan of the Hurricanes into taking a holding penalty and Matt Moulson scored on the power play off a pass from John Tavares behind the net. The Hurricanes would respond with a goal of their own 31 seconds later. Anthony Stewart scored off a face-off win in the Islanders zone.
The second period would see Carolina take the lead off a gaffe by Evgeni Nabokov behind the net. The Islanders goaltender had some miscommunication with Andrew MacDonald, which allowed Brandon Sutter to gain control of the puck and score on an empty net.
Early in the third period Tuomo Ruutu took a high sticking penalty putting the Islanders back on the power play. On the ensuing power play Mark Streit fired a shot that went wide of the net and ricochet off the boards right to Frans Nielsen, who buried the shot in the net, and tied the game at two.
Chad LaRose would untie game later in the period. He was able to dig the puck out from the boards, navigate to the front of the net and put one past Nabokov. However the Hurricane lead would only last three minutes. John Tavares was able to set up Kyle Okposo for a goal at the celebrity news 18:30 mark to tie the game up at three.
The game headed to overtime, which solved nothing, and eventually went to the shootout. PA Parenteau was the first shooter for the Islanders and buried his attempt. Jussi Jokinen scored on his shot for the Hurricanes to knot things up again. Frans Nielsen would use his patent forehand, backhand shot to give the Islanders the 2-1 advantage in the shoot out. Evgenin Nabokov stonewalled Eric Staal on his attempt and Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward stopped Kyle Okposo’s attempt.
Chad LaRose had the opportunity to continue the shoot out with his attempt. LaRose skated down the ice and put a backhand shot on net. Nabokov was able to get a blocker on it and turn the shot away.
The Islanders came away with a crucial two points in the standings and good way to start their three game road trip.
