-Hey! So is Iron Man

First Intermission: Islanders 1 Panthers 1

After one period the Islanders and Panthers are tied at one. They began the game on a high note by scoring the opening goal on their first shot on goal. Frans Nielsen got a nice feed and drove into the offensive zone, blasting a shot past Jose Theodore.

Early in the period the Islanders threw their body around a bit and they kept the Panthers from creating too many scoring chances. On the other end the Isles were able to create several chances and nearly extended it off a Josh Bailey shot.

The Panthers tied the game off a face-off, the puck went back to Tyson Strachan and he blasted it past Nabokov.

Both Goaltenders have stopped eight of nine shots. And shots are tied at nine apiece.

Second Intermission: Islanders 1 Panthers 4

It was an ugly period for the Islanders. The Panthers managed to pull away and lead the game 4-1.

Tomas Fleischmann started the period off 4:17 in.  Kris Versteeg  scored on a bad roughing call on Matt Martin and Jack Skille scored at 18:33.

The Panthers three goals came off six shots through 20 minutes. They out hustled the Islanders for most of the second period, only allowing a small number of scoring chances for the Islanders that were not capitalized on. The Islanders looked sluggish and could not keep up with a Panthers team that, for the time being, seems to want the win more than the Islanders.

Final thoughts:

The Islanders had their chances in the third period, but could not capitalize on any. The Panthers kept them off the board and came away with a crucial win in their hunt for the post season.

If the Islanders want to have any post season shot, which is very very very slim at this point, they will need to win games like this. The Islanders did not play with the urgency they needed to, especially after starting off strong. They cannot afford to have inconsistent games, and yes you can’t win every game, you need to win this type.

This was a playoff like game and was one that would show what this team is made of. Unfortunately, they didn’t show much.
