Uniondale, NY -- It was over a year ago that Doug Weight last suited and hit the ice in a New York Islanders uniform. These days, Weight still suits up; just now he’s in a suit and tie heads behind the bench.
It has been an adjustment for the 22-year NHL pro, but he’s found a new respect for what the coaches do.
“I have a newfound respect for coaches,” Weight said following the Met-RX Skate with the Greats. “So much goes [into] learning that part of the game as far as the education of coaching and having 24 guys come through your room. Some are hot; some are cold, and adjustments in games. It’s been a lot of fun… and the amount of work they do is incredible.”
While the former Islanders captain may be behind the bench now, he still exudes the passion he had on the ice as a player. Weight has become well known for speaking his mind to the officials, with the most well documented one coming during a game against the Maple Leafs.
“Yeah, he's an intense guy,” John Tavares told Yahoo! Sports Puck Daddy blog. “Even at his age, the fire he has and his desire to win and his passion for the game, he gets involved. I don't think he means any disrespect, I think it's just who he is, the competitor he is. I think it's hard for him not to be out there on the ice to make a difference and sometimes it probably comes out of him a little bit too much than he would like, but he cares.”
After watching Weight on the ice Sunday it’s easy to tell that he misses being out on the ice. He even said it, but he’s happy with where life has taken him.
“I’ve been missing [playing] since the day I retired,” Weight said. “It doesn’t make it any easier, watching games like today. Before this we play Florida and we lose. Every game I’m behind the bench it’s a wonderful experience, I love it, but you’ll never have those days back. That’s why they call them memories and I’ll have them forever. Life is full of chapters, so I’m excited to be a part of this one and hopefully I’ll be on Long Island with the Islanders for a long, long celebrity gossip time.”
“I’ve had a great relationship with the coaches I’m with and we’re continuing to get better as coaching staff, as we are a team, and I’ve enjoyed it.”
