Nabokov skated with the New York Islanders for the first time today at Islanders Ice works.

The 36-year-old Russian goaltender looked sharp in his first on ice work out as a member of the New York Islanders. While the coaches ran a very skating intensive session today, they did do several shooting drills in which Nabokov seemed to prove he was ready to compete for the starting job.

However, Nabokov is not fully sure where he stands as far as his preparedness.

“That’s the only thing,” Nabokov started off saying. “It’s easy to get in practice shape, I call it, but it may take a little bit to get in game shape, which is you have to fill the gaps, you have to adjust to the angel shots and stuff like that. That may take some time, maybe not, I don’t know, but you definitely work on that and see how long it takes.”

Nabokov added that nothing was bothering him and the he felt “pretty good” after his on ice session.

He seems to be finding his new team to his likening as well.

“Well it’s unbelievable,” he said when asked about the atmosphere. “It’s such a young group. I think it’s the first time I’ve been around so many young players, so many young talented kids and it’s a great atmosphere.”
